On December 21, 1891, Dr. James Naismith introduced the first game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. Since then, the sport has flourished nationwide, with Southeastern Pennsylvania becoming a notable hub for basketball talent and history.

One of the most illustrious figures from our area is Kobe Bryant, who earned national recognition during a spectacular high school career at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore. Bryant became the first freshman in decades to start for Lower Merion's varsity team, and by his senior year, he led the Aces to a state championship in 1996.

The region's basketball prominence extends to collegiate success, particularly through Villanova University. Under Coach Rollie Massimino, Villanova secured the 1985 NCAA national championship, delivering one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history by defeating Georgetown. This legacy was furthered by Coach Jay Wright, who led the Wildcats to national titles in 2016 and 2018, solidifying Villanova's status as a powerhouse in college basketball.
