On This Day in History: Washington's March to Valley Forge

On December 11, 1777, General George Washington began marching 12,000 Continental Army soldiers from Whitemarsh to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for winter quarters. During the march, British forces under General Charles Cornwallis unexpectedly encountered Washington's troops as they crossed the Schuylkill River.

This surprise led Washington to order a retreat back to Whitemarsh, delaying the army's arrival at Valley Forge until December 19. The winter encampment at Valley Forge became a turning point in the Revolutionary War, where the Continental Army, despite facing severe hardships, transformed into a more disciplined and unified fighting force.
