George Washington’s Time at Valley Forge and His Famous Eggnog Recipe
December is a perfect time to reflect on George Washington's time at Valley Forge, just a short trip from West Chester Pike. During the harsh winter of 1777-78, Washington and his troops endured incredible hardship, solidifying Valley Forge’s place in history as a symbol of resilience and unity.
While his leadership shined through during that time, Washington was also known for his hospitality—and his love for eggnog.
Washington’s eggnog recipe, preserved in history, is both robust and festive, making it a fun addition to your holiday celebrations. Here’s how to make it:
George Washington’s Eggnog Recipe
1 quart cream
1 quart milk
1 dozen tablespoons sugar
1 pint brandy
1/2 pint rye whiskey
1/2 pint Jamaican rum
1/4 pint sherry
12 large eggs (separated)
Instructions:
Beat egg yolks until they lighten in color, then slowly add sugar while continuing to beat.
Mix in the cream, milk, and alcohol.
Separately, beat egg whites to stiff peaks and fold them into the mixture.
Let the mixture sit for several days (if possible) for the flavors to meld.
